Abstract

The aim of this research thesis is to investigate students’ perception of social interaction during the process of online Japanese language learning. The study is based on the theories of social learning and online engagement, which have become particularly relevant in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a 24-item questionnaire based on a 5-point Likert scale, 65 students of the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages studying Japanese online were surveyed. The results showed that successful material acquisition is directly linked to the quality of social interaction — both with the teacher and with fellow students. It was also revealed that support, behavior modeling, group work, and interactive tasks significantly increase student engagement and motivation. This study highlights the necessity of integrating socially-oriented methods when designing online foreign language courses.
