Abstract

The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, particularly in smart home environments, has created new challenges and opportunities in the field of digital forensics. This comprehensive study explores the emerging discipline of IoT forensics, focusing on the analysis of smart home devices. The research examines the unique characteristics of IoT devices, the forensic challenges they present, and the specialized techniques and tools developed to address these challenges. Through a combination of literature review, experimental analysis, and case studies, this study provides insights into the current state of IoT forensics, highlighting both the potential evidentiary value of smart home devices and the technical and legal hurdles in accessing and interpreting this data. Key findings underscore the need for standardized forensic procedures for IoT devices, the importance of understanding diverse IoT ecosystems, and the critical role of privacy and security considerations in IoT forensic investigations. The study concludes by proposing a framework for IoT forensics in smart home environments and outlining future research directions in this rapidly evolving field.
