Abstract

In recent years, pragmatic competence has gained increasing recognition as a vital aspect of second language proficiency, emphasizing the ability to use language appropriately in various social and cultural contexts. This article explores the role of authentic materials in enhancing the pragmatic abilities of English language learners. Authentic materials—such as movies, newspaper articles, podcasts, and real-life dialogues offer learners exposure to natural language use, including speech acts, cultural references, politeness norms, and context-specific expressions. By interacting with language in realistic settings, learners develop a deeper awareness of how meaning is shaped by context, tone, and intention. The article highlights how incorporating authentic materials into classroom instruction not only bridges the gap between textbook English and real-world communication but also promotes learner engagement and intercultural understanding.
