Abstract

Humor and sarcasm have long been integral elements of English poetry, enriching its depth and appeal. This article explores how poets utilize irony,  exaggeration, and dark humor to entertain, critique societal norms and convey complex emotions. By analyzing notable examples from renowned poets such as Dorothy Parker, Sherman Alexie and Edgar Allan Poe, this study highlights the  role of humor and sarcasm: as tools for social commentary and as mechanisms for personal expression. The findings underscore the enduring significance of these literary devices in engaging readers and provoking thought.
