Abstract

This article examines the construction project of the Karateren Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant (PSHPP) in the Republic of Uzbekistan as a strategically important element for ensuring reliable and sustainable energy supply amid the growing share of renewable energy sources. The key technical and economic parameters of the plant are presented, including installed capacity, design head, and annual electricity generation. Special attention is given to the PSHPP’s functions in covering peak loads, balancing the intermittent output of solar and wind power plants, and enhancing the country’s electricity export potential. The article analyzes international experience in operating PSHPPs, highlights the economic and environmental advantages of such facilities, and explores potential financing mechanisms, including public-private partnerships and participation of international financial institutions.
