Keywords:

A distinctive feature of CD is transmural segmental granulomatous inflammation, which can be localized in all parts of the gastrointestinal tract – from the mouth to the anus. In UC, the lesion classically affects only the colon and rectum and the inflammatory process is limited to the mucous membrane and has a diffuse character.

Abstract

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) combine two chronic recurrent inflammatory diseases – Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). IBD is an immuno-mediated disease of unknown etiology and is a chronic inflammatory process affecting the large intestine in the case of UC and various parts of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) in the case of CD. Typical symptoms of IBD are abdominal pain, diarrhea (often with an admixture of blood), fever, weight loss, and less often extra-intestinal symptoms (lesions of joints, eyes, and skin) may occur.
