- Abstract
-
This article explores the German emigration literature (Exilliteratur) of the 20th century, particularly during the period of National Socialist rule from 1933 to 1945. Focusing on the works of Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, Anna Seghers, and Stefan Zweig, the study examines how exile shaped literary identity, narrative structure, and political consciousness. Through close reading and contextual analysis, the article reveals recurring themes of identity fragmentation, linguistic belonging, political resistance, and cultural memory. It argues that German exile literature was not only a form of survival but a powerful ethical and aesthetic response to fascism and totalitarianism. These texts continue to hold relevance in today’s context of global displacement and authoritarian resurgence, offering a timeless testament to the resilience of literature in exile.
