MORPHO-SYNTACTIC VARIATION IN WORLD ENGLISHES: A CORPUS-BASED COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS
Keywords:
World Englishes, morpho-syntax, corpus linguistics, variation, linguistic normsAbstract
As English continues to evolve across geographical and sociolinguistic contexts, distinct varieties known as World Englishes have emerged. This study investigates morpho-syntactic variations in Indian English, Nigerian English, and Singaporean English through a corpus-based approach. By analyzing differences in tense usage, pluralization, article omission, and subject-verb agreement, this research highlights the systematic nature of these variations. The findings affirm that World Englishes, though distinct from Standard British English, adhere to internal rules shaped by cultural and contextual factors. These insights call for a reevaluation of linguistic normativity in English language education and international communication.
