Abstract

This paper presents a detailed overview of the system of English vowel phonemes and their phonological characteristics. It explores the classification of vowels into monophthongs and diphthongs, their distinctive features such as tongue height, position, and lip rounding, as well as the role of vowel length and the schwa sound. The article also discusses key phonological processes involving vowels, including assimilation, elision, linking, and vowel reduction in connected speech. Variations across English dialects and their implications for teaching and learning English pronunciation are highlighted. The study emphasizes the importance of accurate vowel recognition and production for effective oral communication in English.
