Abstract

Ellipsis, the omission of linguistic elements that are recoverable from context [1], [2], [3], is a pervasive phenomenon in English syntax. Its function extends beyond mere brevity; it contributes to fluency, efficiency, and the overall coherence of discourse. This essay will explore the multifaceted role of ellipsis as a crucial mechanism of linguistic economy in English, examining its various types, syntactic constraints, and pragmatic implications.
