Abstract

Proverbs are a rich source of cultural and linguistic knowledge, encapsulating centuries of wisdom, moral values, and collective experiences in a few concise words. This study provides a comparative analysis of English and Uzbek proverbs, aiming to explore how different cultural backgrounds influence the way similar life lessons and social norms are expressed. Drawing from a selection of commonly used proverbs in both languages, the research examines recurring themes such as hard work, honesty, wisdom, patience, and interpersonal relationships. Special attention is given to the metaphorical structure, imagery, and linguistic patterns typical to each language. The analysis reveals that while many English and Uzbek proverbs address comparable topics, they often reflect contrasting worldviews—such as individualism in English culture versus collectivism in Uzbek society. Additionally, religious and historical influences—particularly the role of Islam in Uzbek proverbs and rational pragmatism in English ones—further shape their expression. This study contributes to the fields of comparative linguistics, cultural studies, and intercultural communication by offering insights into how proverbial wisdom can both connect and differentiate global communities.
