LANGUAGE CHOICE AND IDENTITY CONSTRUCTION AMONG BILINGUAL ADOLESCENTS
Abstract
This feature article explores the complex relationship between language choice and identity construction among bilingual adolescents. Drawing on sociolinguistic theories and empirical research, the article examines how bilingual youth navigate their linguistic repertoires to express, negotiate, and sometimes contest their identities in various social contexts. The paper highlights the influence of factors such as peer group affiliations, family dynamics, educational settings, and digital media on language practices. The discussion underscores identity construction's dynamic and context-dependent nature and calls for greater support for bilingualism in educational and community settings.
