ADVANCED BLOOD SUBSTITUTES WITH DETOXIFYING CAPABILITIES
Abstract
Research and technological advancements in this field saw a significant boost in the mid-1980s due to concerns about the risk of HIV transmission through blood transfusions. Additionally, increasing evidence has linked transfusions to the spread of other infectious diseases, such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, West Nile virus encephalitis, coronavirus, human T-cell leukemia virus, and bacterial infections. Beyond infectious risks, allogeneic blood transfusions can lead to various non-infectious complications, including hemolytic transfusion reactions, transfusion-related acute lung injury, graft-versus-host disease, anaphylaxis, and post-transfusion purpura.
