Abstract

This article explores the significance of idioms within the field of applied linguistics. It defines idioms, highlighting their non-literal meaning and cultural specificity, and examines their role in language acquisition, language teaching, translation, and psycholinguistics. The article discusses the challenges idioms pose for language learners and the strategies employed in language teaching to overcome these challenges. It also emphasizes the importance of idiomatic understanding for effective cross-cultural communication. The article offers insights into how idioms impact cognitive processing and how they are processed differently by native and non-native speakers. Overall, it demonstrates the integral role of idioms in mastering language fluency and cultural competence.
