TOWARDS AN INTEGRATED METHODOLOGY FOR APHORISM TRANSLATION: STRATEGIES, ASSESSMENT, AND THE ATQI MODEL
Keywords:
Aphorism Translation, Translation Methodology, Assessment Criteria, Cultural Adaptation, Oscar Wilde, Uzbek Translation.Abstract
This article presents a comprehensive methodological framework for the translation of aphorisms, a challenging literary and philosophical genre characterized by extreme conciseness, stylistic polish, and cultural embeddedness. Moving beyond generic translation theories, the proposed approach synthesizes key principles from Nida, Newmark, Venuti, and others to formulate genre-specific strategies. The article introduces the Aphorism Translation Quality Index (ATQI), an innovative five-dimensional model for assessing translations based on Conceptual Fidelity, Aesthetic Integrity, Cultural Mediation, Textual Functionality, and Reader Reception. Developed and validated through an analysis of Oscar Wilde's aphorisms in Uzbek translations, the ATQI provides translators, critics, and scholars with a systematic tool for both creating and evaluating aphorism translations. The article concludes with pedagogical implications and suggestions for future research.
