Abstract

The early 20th century was a transformative period for Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan, as it saw the rise of the Jadid movement and the spread of national press that contributed to the formation of a distinct Uzbek national identity. This article explores the comparative roles of the Jadid press and the Russian imperial press in shaping the national consciousness of Central Asia. The study focuses on the media's impact on language, education, women's rights, and political movements, analyzing how each press system either facilitated or obstructed the development of national identity and self-awareness. The Jadid press emerged as a tool for modernizing education, promoting social reform, and advocating for Uzbek language and cultural revival, while the Russian imperial press aimed to maintain colonial control and suppress local identities. By examining these two contrasting forces, this article highlights the role of the press in both fostering and constraining social change and national identity in early 20th century Central Asia.
