Abstract

This thesis explores “A Rose for Emily” as a powerful allegory for the South's resistance to change, arguing that William Faulkner uses the story to critique the clinging to a romanticized past at the expense of progress and societal evolution. The analysis delves into the symbolism of the decaying house, the town of Jefferson, and Emily Grierson's refusal to accept modernity, highlighting Faulkner's portrayal of a society clinging to a fading identity. Through a close reading of the text, this thesis examines the themes of tradition versus progress, the weight of the past, and the societal pressures faced by individuals caught in the transition between eras. The thesis concludes by arguing that “A Rose for Emily” is a poignant and unsettling reflection of the South's struggle to reconcile its romanticized past with the demands of a changing world, offering a timeless critique of the dangers of clinging to outdated social structures and values.
