Abstract

The chemical industry plays a vital role in the development of modern economies by supplying essential materials to a wide range of industrial sectors. However, it remains one of the largest contributors to environmental pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and excessive energy consumption. This study investigates the critical issue of sustainability in the chemical industry, emphasizing the need for a systemic transition towards more eco-friendly and resource-efficient practices. The research identifies major barriers to sustainability, such as outdated technologies, inefficient energy use, and a low level of circularity in production cycles. Furthermore, the paper analyzes modern approaches to sustainable transformation, including the adoption of low-carbon and energy-efficient technologies, utilization of renewable and bio-based raw materials, integration of circular economy models, and compliance with international environmental standards. Based on global best practices, the study proposes a strategic framework for the sustainable modernization of the chemical industry that ensures both environmental responsibility and economic competitiveness. The findings are intended to assist policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers in advancing sustainable industrial practices in both developed and developing countries.
