- Abstract
-
This study examines the role of lexical borrowings in enriching the vocabulary of English as a Second Language (ESL) learners. Borrowings—words adopted from foreign languages—are a key source of lexical expansion in English, yet their pedagogical potential remains underutilized in ESL instruction. Through a mixed-methods approach, this research analyzes how explicit teaching of borrowings (e.g., from French, Latin, Arabic, and Turkic languages) impacts learners’ lexical diversity, etymological awareness, and communicative competence. Results indicate that systematic exposure to borrowings enhances vocabulary retention, cultural literacy, and metalinguistic curiosity. The study advocates for integrating loanwords into ESL curricula as a strategy for vocabulary development.
