Abstract

This thesis explores the pedagogical effectiveness of teaching vocabulary in context rather than in isolation. Teaching vocabulary in context emphasizes the understanding and use of words through meaningful exposure, which facilitates better retention and usage. The paper reviews theoretical frameworks and empirical studies that support contextual vocabulary instruction, compares it with traditional decontextualized methods, and suggests strategies for practical classroom implementation. Findings suggest that contextual instruction improves learners’ retention, deepens semantic understanding, and enhances communicative competence, especially for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) learners.
