Pneumonia develops when bacteria, viruses, and other foreign agents infect the lungs or a part of the lung tissues.

Abstract

Pneumonia, or inflammation of the lungs, is an infectious disease that affects lung tissues and interferes with the normal exchange of oxygen between air and blood. Inflammatory secretions that enter the alveoli prevent the body from receiving an adequate amount of oxygen. If the disease affects a large part of the lungs, acute respiratory failure can develop. People with weakened immune systems, children, and the elderly are prone to pneumonia.
