Abstract

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon with a progressive global prevalence. Although conservative therapy remains the cornerstone of treatment, 10–30% of patients require surgical intervention during the course of the disease. Total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is considered the gold standard. This study evaluates the clinical and economic outcomes of stapler-assisted versus hand-sewn anastomosis in UC patients undergoing reconstructive surgery.
