Abstract

Needs analysis forms the foundation of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course design by identifying learners’ specific linguistic and professional requirements. Traditional methods, such as surveys and interviews, are essential but often fail to actively engage learners or uncover nuanced needs. This study investigates the role of interactive classroom activities in conducting effective needs analysis in ESP courses. The methods included professional role-play, peer brainstorming, and group discussions conducted with 20 intermediate-level students across three sessions. Findings indicate that these activities improve student engagement by 35%, enhance the depth of data collected, and facilitate more precise tailoring of ESP curricula. This paper discusses the implications for educators, challenges encountered, and future directions for integrating innovative practices in needs analysis.
